8 brilliant things to do this week in Shanghai
The best of the week
ShanghaiPRIDE
Until Sunday 26, Venues around Shanghai
ShanghaiPRIDE continues all this week, with highlights being the ongoing Pride film festival, which is showcasing new and emerging film-making talent, and the official closing party on Saturday night at Fuxing SOHO. Head to the Pride website for a full schedule of events.
Machine Dreams
Until July 31, island6, Free
What will it mean to be human once technology becomes a seamless part of our existence? Has that already happened? How will it feel to have robots cook your meals, raise your children and pillow-talk with you every night? Once technology does everything, what the hell will we do all day? Quirky collective island6 explores these ideas and a whole bunch of others, with a smirk of course.
DJ Day
Friday 24, The Shelter, 60RMB
One for fans of soulful jazz-infused hip hop. Palm Springs’ DJ Day has won plaudits from the likes of Peanut Butter Wolf and DJ Jazzy Jeff. He’s a producer and multi-instrumentalist as well as a DJ, a talent best exemplified by his ambitious release Land Of 1000 Chances. Have a listen below and you'll hear why this show is one of the month's highlights.
Elsewhere, You won’t need us to tell you this week sees the traditional Swedish Midsummer festival take place, and Elevator celebrate accordingly by bringing Red Bull Music Academy graduate and Studio Barnhus founder Kornel Kovacs over from Stockholm for a midsummers rave. Swedish support from Lindberg and Tobias Patrick.
The Royal Danish Ballet
Thursday 23-Sunday 26, Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre, 80-1,280RMB
The Great Danes are bringing two of their finest pieces to Shanghai, one of which helped usher in dance's Romantic era. The style of choreographer August Bournonville has secured their international position - even by ballet standards they make it look easy.
The biggest complaint about the RDB is that they don't tour enough, so don't miss this rare presentation of two of their most famous works, the haunting La Sylphide together with George Balanchine's Theme and Variations (Sat-Sun) and the vivacious Napoli (Thu-Fri).
Finding Dory
At cinemas across Shanghai now
You might be eager to write off this belated sequel to Pixar flick Finding Nemo, but believe it or not its a hit with critics and audiences alike. The tale of the amiable but forgetful fish (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) has some stellar voice performances, and is living up to the considerable weight of its underwater predecessor thirteen years ago. Get tickets for the film through Time Out Tickets on our website.
God is an Astronaut
Friday 24, MAO Livehouse, 350RMB
Irish instrumental titans God Is An Astronaut return to Shanghai for a 2016 show, two years on from their last appearance here. It's a highlight in what has been a big month of post-rock at MAO. Read our archive interview with God is an Astronaut founder Torsten Kinsella online.
